Grand Designs Live, the record-breaking exhibition based on the hugely popular Talkback THAMES series for Channel Four, today announces major sponsorship from WWF for 2006.

WWF, the world’s largest independent conservation organisation, committed to promoting the use of sustainable materials and reducing waste, pollution and unnecessary consumption, will be represented by a state-of-the-art feature at the show. The feature will be designed to communicate the principles of One Planet Living (OPL) and demonstrate to the exhibition’s expected 50,000-strong audience how their homes and behaviour can be more energy efficient and sustainable, benefiting the environment as well as their health.

The charity will also use Grand Designs Live 2006 to launch the Little Guide to One Planet Living. The book is an aspirational guide to sustainable and ethical living, with a foreword written by design guru and Grand Designs TV presenter Kevin McCloud.

McCloud, recently announced as a WWF ambassador, is well known for his passionate commitment to the use of sustainable materials in domestic and commercial build developments. He comments: ‘I am delighted that WWF have not only lent Grand Designs Live such support but have also collaborated with the event so closely. The way we build our houses and the way we live in them have a profound impact on the planet’s well-being as well as our own.

Sustainability has moved from being a fringe issue to something that touches every aspect of our lives and so it’s absolutely appropriate that the WWF One Planet Living campaign should have such a central presence at Grand Designs Live.’

WWF will also work with Grand Designs Live to make the exhibition more ‘green’, advising the show organisers on everything from CO2 emissions to sustainable materials procurement and ethical catering.

Paul King, Director of WWF’s One Million Sustainable Homes campaign, said: ‘Our homes and communities have a significant impact on the environment, both during their construction and whilst we live in them. The challenge therefore is to find ways for people everywhere to enjoy a high standard of life, without exhausting the planet’s natural resources.

‘We’re delighted therefore to be at Grand Designs Live this year, with the opportunity of speaking to thousands of people interested in design and new technology. After all, if everyone on the planet continues to consume natural resources and generate carbon dioxide at the rate we do in Europe, we’ll need three planets to support us!’
