From March 2-9, the world’s largest indoor flower show, the 2008 Philadelphia Flower Show will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Centre, Pennsylvania, USA, with the theme “Jazz It Up!” Unique aesthetics and displays will enhance the musical ambience at this year’s Show in addition to the star performances taking place throughout.

Philadelphia gave birth to America’s first horticultural society, The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, in 1827 and the nation’s first flower show, the Philadelphia Flower Show, in 1829. Twenty-five Society members showed off their horticultural treasures including a variety of exotic and native plants like peonies from China, an Indian rubber tree, the Coffee Tree of Arabia and sugar cane from the West Indies.

The show now encompasses 33 indoor acres and entertains crowds of over 250,000 people each year. This year, visitors can experience 10 acres of stunning musically themed displays to dispel any winter blues. One of these is a huge archway of giant floating piano keys, musical notes and a waterfall which stands outside the Rhythm Rooms Jazz Club, created in collaboration with Lamsback Floral Decorators. This central feature of the Show contains six rhythm rooms and more than thirty full-size palm trees.

Street dancing acts will lead the crowds through the Show to where jazz musicians will perform classical to contemporary jazz. Like jazz, gardening is about individual expression –expressing yourself through plants, flowers, colour, texture and scents, and giving something life, movement and feeling.

Alongside a plethora of exhibitors from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, international exhibitors include Tourism Ireland, staged by Celtic Gardens and Jacques Amand, The Bulb Specialist from Holland. Amongst the unique attractions this year are a 35 foot tall Edith Bogue Magnolia, a jazz performance in the gazebo of a park that features sustainable drainage ideas and a musical fountain.
