Description

The Manor House Garden – Upton Grey

Gertrude Jekyll designed The Manor House garden in 1908. In 5 acres she included almost every facet of her garden art.

In the Wild garden grass steps lead to winding paths that run through rambling roses, shrubs and walnut trees to a pond.
The Formal garden is framed by a yew hedge. Here a pergola leads to a rose lawn, planted dry-stone walls, and bowling and tennis lawns.
Shallow steps on either side lead back to the main herbaceous borders where colours drift from cool to hot and cool. Scent, texture and structure are important components in this art.
The garden also includes a nuttery, orchard, kitchen garden and all important compost heaps.
It is the most complete and accurately restored of Jekyll’s gardens and copies of her plans are on display.
