NCCPG National Plant Collection Open Days blossom in April and May 2007

From the chocolate vine, Akebia, to the imposing Veratrum: there are over 50 NCCPG National Plant Collection® Open Days for gardeners to visit across the UK in April and May. Here are a just a few highlights: find the full list on www.nccpg.com.
The fragrant clouds of the NCCPG National Collection of Hyacinthus orientalis will be open to the public in Waterbeach, Cambs, on 1st April (also 31st March). In Burlingham near Norwich on 2nd April the Forsythia Collection is open and for quince enthusiasts the NCCPG National Collection of Cydonia oblonga is open at Norton Priory Museum & Gardens in Runcorn, Cheshire, on 7th April.
Primula plants range from acid-lovers to lime-lovers. The NCCPG National Collection of pro-lime Primula allionii cvs and hybrids is open at Field House Nurseries in Gotham, Nottingham on 22nd and 25th April, at which time their Collection of Primula auricula hort (alpine & show) will also be displayed. Primula auricula (show alpines and doubles) will also be on display at the NCCPG National Collection held by Lesley Dawson & Gil Roberts near Salisbury, Wilts, on 21st & 22nd April.
New for 2007, the recently-added NCCPG National Collection of Akebia, based in Elstree, Herts, will be open on 22nd April. Others also open on that day include the NCCPG National Collection of Rosmarinus officinalis, open in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, and, at the National Trust’s Winkworth Arboretum, the Collection of Sorbus (section Aria and Micromeles).
Also for 2007, on 12th & 13th May, the NCCPG National Collection of Geum will be open in Cranbrook, Kent. The Elaeagnus Collection will be open at Beale Arboretum in Barnet, Herts, also on that day. On an altogether bigger scale, also on 13th May at Tiverton in Devon, the NCCPG National Collection of Quercus, comprising over 200 species and over 100 cultivars, will be open.
With the blue skies of spring comes the opening of the NCCPG National Collection of Ceanothus by Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council in the West Midlands on 18th & 19th May, whilst the pick of the Polemoniaceae (Polemonium, Collomia & Leptodactylon will be open near Durham on 6th & 7th and 27th & 28th May, along with second Collection, of Hakonechloa grasses, at the same location. Imposing Veratrum can be seen in Shropshire on 20th May.
All the Ds line up towards the end of May with the NCCPG National Collection of Dictamnus open in Shropshire on 20th May; some 95 types of Dianthus on show on 27th & 28th May near Plymouth, Devon; and Digitalis at Melksham, Wiltshire from 27th-30th May. And with the arrival of summer, we also see an open day at the NCCPG National Collection of Papaver orientale on 23rd and 30th May at Water Meadow Nursery near Alresford, Hampshire.
