Description
Inspiring Spaces is back after its debut in 2006. The category is open exclusively to garden centres and other professional organisations. It aims to demonstrate creative ways to enliven small and awkward spaces in the garden with imaginative container planting. All of the Inspiring Spaces are 2m x 2m in size.

A rustic-style patio paved with vintage stone setts. The gaps between the setts are planted with thyme and chamomile. Willow wigwams and terracotta pots planted with rosemary, lavender and verbena. Edibles, such as strawberries, chives, oregano, sweetpeas, runner beans and nasturtiums, complete the planting.

This display represents the globe, when water was plentiful. A lush green sphere of topiary is surrounded by an ‘equator’ of hot trailing plants in a circular planter with dots of millet representing the struggle to grow in hot climates.

The design, consisting mainly summer bedding plants, includes four planted pots in each corner, with a main planted feature in the centre. At the top of this feature hang three hanging baskets planted with a mixture of begonias, geraniums and fuchsias.

This exhibit highlights the wide range of coloured foliage plants available for container planting and is suitable for a courtyard area either in a home or offices. The central planter, made of brushed stainless steel, is surrounded by four quarter-circle planters. Two seating areas on the surrounding containers are made from clear Perspex which is hinged allowing the underneath area to be planted too. Two additional planted circular stainless steel containers are further interest and height variance. Planting includes Alchemilla mollis, Carex, Heuchera, Liriope muscari, Phormiums, Rosmarinus, Salvia and Sedum.

This Inspiring Space aims to portray some of the formality of Waddesdon using edible plants, flowers and fruits, and demonstrate that even with the smallest plot you can achieve a productive and sensual space to excite the senses. Terracotta pots are planted with fragrant plants such as lavender and rosemary, under-planted with trailing tomatoes, nasturtium, beans and viola, and spaces filled with chilli peppers, exotic leaf lettuce, strawberries, bush tomatoes and basil. A low fragrant rosemary hedge surrounds the space, and two chamomile plants cut through the area. All plants are grown using natural pest control and in peat-free compost.
