SPRING BEGINS IN TIME FOR RHS CARDIFF SHOW
The glorious weather in Wales this week comes at just the right time for the RHS Show Cardiff in the city’s Bute Park April 8-10, the first Royal Horticultural Society outdoor show of the season – packed with spring blooms and features.
Described as “a real gem of a show full of gorgeous spring blooms” by Jekka McVicar, the herb guru and head of the judges at Cardiff and several other RHS shows this season, the show has grown this year, boasting eight show gardens, a number of new exhibitors and a record entry of 75 schools taking part in the popular and colourful Schools Wheelbarrow competition, endorsed by Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins.
Last April over 24,000 visitors from across the UK enjoyed the best of the spring blooms from nurseries who also feature at Chelsea and Hampton Court, with ideas and inspiration for the growing season ahead, all gathered under blue skies. Among the attractions this year are:
an Interactive Allotment by Radio 2’s Allotment Doctor Terry Walton
a Barefoot Beekeeper, Lynne Allbutt on the virtues of Bee-friendliness
a Shelter Box garden to raise funds for disaster zones
a West Meets East oriental garden by Gaynor Witchard
the launch of the Welsh Warrior Daffodil in honour of a Welsh casualty in Afghanistan
talks, demonstrations and expert advice
Schools Wheelbarrow competition
floral marquees & Plant Plaza, including first timers at Cardiff – McBean’s Orchids and Trewidden Nursery
RHS Shows Director Stephen Bennett said: “We’re all hoping this weather lasts for the first RHS outdoor show of the season. We love coming to Cardiff and this year there are more reasons than ever for the crowds to turn out in the splendid parklands of Cardiff Castle.”
