The South African Airways Cape Town Flower Show 2006 takes place from Thursday October 26 to Sunday October 29 at the Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West, Cape Town. The event showcases indigenous South African plants alongside exhibits of exotic species and offers a marketplace of gardening products and innovations with a botanical theme.

Show gardens form the prime attraction to the show, with luminaries and novices of the garden design world creating inspiring gardens that mirror the changing enthusiasms of gardeners.

Don’t miss the award-winning Kirstenbosch-South Africa exhibit which won gold at the Chelsea Flower Show in May. The exhibit will be reinstalled at the South African Airways Cape Town Flower Show.Six hectares of land at Lourensford Estate has been cleared and planted with grasses to create a new site for the show. The new site is double the size of last year’s site and has been designed specifically to the show’s requirements with parking for an additional 600 vehicles.

“The main ethos of the South African Airways Cape Town Flower Show is to entertain and inspire a love of gardening in people and a pride in themselves as South African gardeners, by nurturing and cultivating a relationship with gardening that integrates the dynamic influences and values of changing lifestyles,” said David Davidson, show manager.

“It is my intention to create for the flower show, an extravaganza of colour, design form and entertainment, focused on horticulture, garden design and construction, art, gardening products and to include fine cuisine and other lifestyle choices. “

Exciting design concepts and planting plans for show gardens have already been submitted to the show’s selection committee and the organisers are confident that this year’s show will offer visitors an event of a truly international standard.

The Kirstenbosch-South Africa exhibit which won gold at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in May this year will be reinstalled at the show in order to give Capetonians the opportunity to view it.

A variety of entertainment has been planned including a line-up of speakers for the popular lecture series aimed at stimulating fresh ideas and providing inspiration and sound advice.  This is to be extended to include demonstrations by well-known authors of cook books who will give advice on the growing, preparation and serving of great and innovative food.

For the 2nd year Weaver Bird Polo will be organising the Cape Town Flower Show Polo Tournament at the show grounds on Saturday 28 October.  Designated picnic area’s overlooking the polo field will be open to the public and visitors wishing to enjoy the game in style can buy a table for ten on the raised covered wooden deck and enjoy cocktails on arrival followed by a three course gourmet lunch and later in the day a sumptuous high tea.  Table reservations should be made in advance with the organizers of the show.

The many and varied exhibits combined with great food and entertainment, will ensure that the South African Airways Cape Town Flower Show 2006 provides an entertaining days outing for the whole family.

The show opens at 10am and closes at 7pm with an entrance fee of R40 for adults, while children under 12 enter free.  Senior citizens will pay R25 on presentation of a pensioner’s card.
