Description

Plants with Purpose started in May 2001 as a small back-garden nursery specialising in the more esoteric herbs, and now has a stocklist of over 250 useful, culinary, medicinal, wildlife and edible subjects. You’ll find many unusual varieties, such as Emperor Hadrian’s Mint or Rock Samphire, and many whose names alone are magical – like Mad Dog Scullcap and Good King Henry!

With our interest in edible plants, wild and cultivated, spinning out of control, Plants with Purpose joined forces with Appletreeman in 2010, and now supply an ever-widening range of fruit trees, nut bushes and fruiting shrubs. In 2011, we expect to have many home-grown historical and traditional Scottish varieties in the catalogue – again with names to conjure with (the Bloody Ploughman dancing with the Lass of Gowrie). See RESOURCES for the stories behind the apples!

PLEASE VISIT OUR WEBSITE OR GET IN TOUCH ([email protected] , [email protected] , or phone 01738 787278 / 07871 451579) FOR AVAILABILITY OF HERITAGE AND STANDARD PEAR, APPLE, PLUM, CHERRY, QUINCE, MEDLAR AND NUT TREES SOLD BARE ROOT FROM NOVEMBER TO END OF MARCH, AND ALL OTHER PRODUCTS.

Together we run workshops, courses, training days and events, from apple identification to pruning, from wild food foraging to wildlife gardening, and provide a unique consultancy service. We do not use chemicals (and are working towards full organic status
for the fruit); we specialise in plants, advice and techniques which enhance biodiversity and encourage local resilience; we aim to avoid waste minimise use of non-renewable resources. That’s why if you visit you’ll find the garden such a mess!

Courses, Talks and Workshops

Appletreeman and Plants with Purpose specialise in running workshops and events, and regularly give talks to community groups and organisations.

Workshops run at Plants with Purpose are diverse and stimulating. “Beginning with Herbs” and “Using Herbs Creatively” take you through how to grow, preserve, cook, make cosmetic and medicinal preparations, and introduce a range of herbs rarely seen in garden centres.
“Grow Your Own” courses will stimulate the novice gardener into greater self-sufficiency. ” Creating Wildlife Gardens”, “Forest Gardening”, “Designing for Wildlife” and “Unco-operative Plants” will put the participant right on most aspects of sustainable gardening.

And our popular Wild Food Days, Weekends and Rambles have something for everyone – fruits, fungi, vegetables and roots – covering recognition and identification skills as well as uses.

A fanatical pursuant of all things fruity (!), the Appletreeman runs a seamless programme of related workshops and events throughout the year, starting with winter pruning and tree renovation in winter, moving onto bench grafting and orchard planning in spring, orchard pests and disease management, budding and summer pruning, fruit identification and apple days, then cidermaking and drinking, not that anyone requires a course in that!

We can quote to run these and many other courses in horticulture to groups of any size and level of experience and tailor them to your needs. We are both experienced and qualified teachers and trainers as well as horticulturists with decades of experience!
