Welcome to KLC

klc_school_of_design_jennygibbs.jpg

Jenny Gibbs, Principal I set up the school 27 years ago as I felt there was a need for courses that addressed the real practicalities of design as well as the more obvious aesthetics. The idea behind this has remained the focus of the school as it has developed over the years as students have found that a sound, practical grasp of the subject combined with professional communication skills gives them the confidence they need to set out to work in the garden or interior design industry.

We work hard to provide the right, up to date training for the industries we serve and constantly review the content and delivery of our courses in the light of the regular surveys we carry out. We have recently increased our programme substantially to include more flexible part time and short courses and our course advisors will be happy to spend time putting together the most suitable way forward for your needs. The approach here is geared to adult learning and we try to make the courses, however intensive, thoroughly enjoyable and the atmosphere friendly and professional. The focus of the training is on developing the individual potential of each student and our extensive careers service is designed to help students on the professional courses make a successful transition from course to workplace.

Our staff work together as a close knit team and we are all dedicated to achieving the highest standards possible. I hope that among the various courses detailed here you will find something of interest and look forward to welcoming you to the school.

Hampton Court Palace

Since September 2008, KLC’s Garden Design Courses have been run in the magnificent splendour of Hampton Court Palace.

The workshop elements take place in a private apartment within the Palace itself with breathtaking views over the formal gardens, whilst the outdoor practical elements will be held in the tranquil 20th Century Gardens, which appropriately used to be the apprentices’ garden.

What Makes KLC the Industry Leader?

At KLC, we make a special effort to be forward-thinking and proactive. We train the designers of the future and therefore take pains to properly immerse ourselves in the industry we support.

We have an annual exhibition of graduates’ work, coupled with our award ceremony which is sponsored by a range of some of the most prestigious companies within the industry.

KLC regularly appears at Exhibitions such as the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and Decorex International. We also develop tailor-made company training days, as well as putting together events exclusively for some of the leading home interest magazines. Overseas links are also important to the school and we are proud to be affiliated with Machida Academy in Japan and Details School in Russia and have working links with RMIT in Australia and Western Carolina University in the USA.

We continue to look to the future with our in-house IT team developing additional learning resources and student support. KLC uses Adobe Connect, which is a secure flexible web communication system that allows on-line training, web conferencing and online collaboration, and allows students to have an interactive experience with both the tutor and other students in the classroom.

DIRECTOR OF STUDIES
Diana McKnight, BIDA

As KLC’s Director or Studies, Diana is responsible for the planning and management of all courses.  Having worked on a variety of residential and commercial interior design schemes, she subsequently qualified to teach, enabling her to take a hands-on approach at KLC across a wide range of subjects commensurate with her experience.  This included the design and implementation of projects in historic houses and hotels, also schools.  Undoubtedly the most challenging and prestigious in her portfolio was that of No Man’s Land Fort in the Solent.  In addition to work at KLC, she continues to run her interior design practice and has been involved in projects, most recently in Moscow, and in Italy as well as London. She is a fellow of BIDA, currently responsible for members in the South-East, for whom she organises continual professional development seminars and is also joining the BIDA Education Committee in Autumn 2008

VICE PRINCIPAL / DIRECTOR OF CAREERS
Marcy Brown, BSc BIDA

Marcy has been involved with KLC for just over 20 years. Graduating from New York University with a combined degree in English and Education, she came to England and taught at the American School in St. John's Wood. She was then lured by friends into fashion retailing of which interior design has been a natural extension. Marcy has been instrumental in creating the unique careers department at KLC and assists students in finding suitable employment or work experience, as well as offering advice on CV’s, portfolio presentation and career direction.

Careers Service

Certificate group photo taken on their last dayOur industry links are second to none and we provide an outstanding careers service combining carefully structured career workshops, individual careers advice and mentoring and work experience opportunities. Employers return to us on a regular basis knowing that our students will have had a realistic and practical training for the design workplace and that great care will have been taken to match the student to the requirements of the practice.

KLC is very proactive about helping graduates find employment at the end of the course. Marcy Brown, Director of Careers, assists students in finding suitable employment or work experience and graduates from KLC professional courses are now employed by a range of prestigious companies (a list is available here). Marcy is available to offer advice on CV’s, portfolio presentation and career direction and, with many approaches from some of the leading design companies, is often able to put graduates directly in touch with potential employers.

KLC keeps in close contact with past students worldwide through the KLC Design Network and continues to offer on-going careers advice. As a participant in many leading design exhibitions, our policy is to involve students both past and present, as fully as possible. Many graduates return after experience in the field to become our tutors. KLC will put any design enquiries from members of the public through to practising graduates.

This amalgamates the experience and specialist knowledge of a variety of well-established figures within the Interior and Garden Design industries, together with the fresh inspiration and enthusiasm of young designers whose role is to provide course cohesion. This provides students with a relevant, up-to-date design education coupled with invaluable day-to-day support from our in-house tutors.
