Chelsea Medal Winner – Chic gardens

John Gilbert Garden Designer/Curtis & Curtis Landscapes
Work, Rest and Play

Designer: John Gilbert
Sponsor: Premier Plants UK
Contractor: Curtis & Curtis

Traditional pub table skittles is the unusual focal point in this urban space, where the most is made out of a small outdoor area to enable the owners to work, rest and play in soothing surroundings.
A canopied computer workstation allows workers to deal with e-mails in tranquillity, while the colours, textures and scents of the planted area provide a setting to unwind and entertain friends.
The planting is designed to need little maintenance, but to have interest and structure all year round. It includes a number of repetitions to create a sense of order and unity and has a high proportion of evergreens. The colour palette is strong, but subtle. There is a wide range of leaf colour, texture and imposing plant forms.
After spending 23 years as a journalist, garden design is John’s second career. John went to Capel Manor Horticulture College, before setting up as a designer 10 years ago and says he hasn’t looked back since.
