LCpl Johnson Beharry VC for Help for Heroes at Chelsea 2008
LCpl Johnson Beharry VC and Chelsea Pensioner Charles Bigland came to the Hillier Chelsea Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in the grounds of the Royal Chelsea Hospital to promote the Help for Heroes charity and the ‘Help for Heroes’ rose.
Romsey-based Hillier Nurseries presented a cheque to the Help for Heroes charity for £15 265, which the company has raised so far by donating £5 from the sale of each and every rose. The ‘Help for Heroes’ rose is a lightly scented floribunda bearing a profusion of red double blooms on glossy dark green foliage from June through to the first frosts. As a Private, LCpl Johnson Beharry from 1st Battalion the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment was awarded Victoria Cross in March 2005. He became the first person to be recognised with the VC since 1982 and the first living recipient since 1965. LCpl Beharry received the Victoria Cross for two separate acts of outstanding gallantry of the highest order whilst based in Al Amarah, Maysan Province, Iraq, in 2004, during which he sustained severe injuries. LCpl Johnson Beharry spent eight months in total at the MOD’s rehabilitation centre Headley Court in Surrey.
To date, the Help for Heroes charity has raised a staggering £5.5m since October 2007 towards their initial objective of £6m to provide a gym and pool facility for solidiers rehabilitating at the MOD’s Headley Court unit. Visit their website for further details at www.helpforheroes.org.uk
