18th-century mansion with National Portrait Gallery paintings and walled garden

York's 'country house and garden', this grand Georgian mansion with an impressive baroque interior exhibits over 100 18th-century portraits in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery. Built in 1716, the house has remarkable cantilevered stairs, exceptional wood carving and an unusual central corridor. There is a fully equipped Victorian Laundry, a delightful walled garden and interesting wooden sculptures
