Adventures in Gardening’
Hillier at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2010
In partnership with The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company

“Gardening is an Adventure is our message for Chelsea 2010,” says Andy McIndoe, designer of the Hillier Chelsea exhibit and Managing Director of Hillier Nurseries. This year’s Hillier garden at the heart of the Great Pavilion will comprise a series of interlinking gardens inspired by the colours and imagery of Venice, Morocco, the Himalayas, the water’s edge and woodland glades. It will re-awaken the sense of gardening as a voyage of discovery and give the gardening public fresh inspiration to take home.

Aiming for their 65th consecutive RHS Chelsea Gold medal, Hillier have joined forces with The Scotts
Miracle-Gro Company to share Real Garden Advice from Real People, a project to gather tips and advice from those with more experience of the gardening adventure. A Secret Garden Diary Room forms part of the Hillier exhibit and visitors to Chelsea will be invited to divulge on film their gardening tips from the Throne of Knowledge or consult the Oracle on the Couch of Consultation.

The Garden Design – ‘Adventures in Gardening’

‘Adventures in Gardening’ is all about the essence of gardening – how to create a picture, another world that transports the gardener to a different land. The adventure of putting plants together to achieve exciting combinations of colour, texture and form stimulates the desire to explore further. Whilst many of the plants in the Hillier Garden are familiar hardy trees, shrubs and perennials, they are magically woven together into something new, exciting and inspiring.

Venetian Adventure: A masked ball provides the inspiration for this sophisticated scheme with planting in rich Venetian colours - deep plum purple, dark sapphire blue, crimson, cerise pink, burnt orange and black with hints of metallic gold and silver.

Moroccan Magic: Deep red terracotta render conjures images of the red walls of Marrakech; bright blue, orange and yellow echo the vibrant hues of Jardin Majorelle; whilst silver foliage and aromatic pines suggest hot, arid conditions. This is a garden for hot summer days and romantic, starry Arabian Nights.

Indian Intrigue: English gardens owe much to the flora of the Himalayas and the great plant hunters, and this garden is a plant collector’s treasure chest, celebrating some of the gems of the plant world that can be grown by any gardener with a passion for plants.

White Water:  The illusion of space is created using the dimension of height and depth, and a limited colour palette. You experience the cool, calm effect of green and white planting around still and moving water crossed by stepping stones.

Sylvan Spirit: This woodland trail showcases the beauty of slender trees and the plants that thrive in their shadows. The pale bark of birches brings light to the shade, whilst the variety of colour and form of foliage can transform the lower layer of planting with or without flowers. This planting picture could be used for a small shaded town garden or a much larger country plot.

Real Garden Advice for Real Gardeners

The Secret Garden – Hidden behind leafy screens, this tranquil green oasis houses the Throne of Knowledge and the Couch of Consultation where you can ask the Garden Oracle for guidance.

In the gardening equivalent of the Big Brother Diary Room, the Hillier Secret Garden at Chelsea 2010 will be a forum for the exchange of knowledge. Precious nuggets of advice and encouragement of those who have ventured along the gardening trail before you will be recorded, and stressed-out gardeners will be invited to consult the Garden Oracle for help and advice on problems they have encountered along the way.

In the build-up to the show, the Throne of Knowledge and Couch of Consultation will be on tour at Hillier garden centres with garden novices and garden veterans alike providing a fascinating snapshot of the Great British Gardening Public.

The resulting pool of wisdom will be available online on and via and

Both Hillier Nurseries and Garden Centres and The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company have a long history in the world of gardening. Both companies are Chelsea veterans with many years of experience advising gardeners and supplying them with plants and products to make their gardens beautiful.  This year they join forces at Chelsea to advise and to hear from real gardeners what they have learned from their adventure in gardening.

Hillier have been exhibiting at Chelsea Flower Show since the early days of the show in the grounds of The Royal Hospital. The company holds the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive RHS Chelsea Gold Medals – winning Gold Number 64 in 2009. Could 2010 could be
their 65th? Traditionally this would be the age to retire…….
