It is interesting to reflect upon how much gardening and the garden industry has changed in the last 30 years. When I started my career with Hillier back in 1978 garden centres were only just starting. Most gardeners ordered their plants from a catalogue for delivery or collection during the autumn and winter. Bedding plants were sold during May and June and the summer and winter were very quiet times of the year in garden retail. The out of town store selling everything was something new and retailers still specialised.
Gardening has changed too. Today there is more emphasis on design and planning. Gardens are considered as part of the home and used more extensively throughout the year. Our changing climate enables us to grow plants outside that would have been considered too tender to survive without protection. The range of plant material available to the gardener has never been wider: some of it the legacy of the plant collectors of the last two centuries and some the result of the plant breeder and hybridist.
Hillier has a great horticultural heritage and a world wide reputation for the range and quality of the plants we grow. Although the product range offered at Hillier Garden Centres has grown and changed with the times we never forget our roots. Hillier Garden Centres are still very much gardening centres focusing on plants and the needs of the gardener. This passion for gardening is reflected in our Gardening club, now with over 200,000 members who appreciate the advice and information we pass on through the Hillier Gardening club magazine.
The Hillier Manual of Trees and Shrubs has been the gardener’s Bible since it was first published in 1972. The Hillier Gardener’s Guides are our new range of books that offer user-friendly advice and inspiration to gardeners of all abilities. They are written by gardeners for gardeners and reflect the enjoyment that gardening brings to all of us. Click the image ( left) for more information on all the titles available, and here to download an order form. Read some of our reviews here .
I hope that you enjoy visiting Hillier Garden Centres and that we deliver more than the level of service you hope for. We have many knowledgeable and experienced staff and many that are keen to learn. We aim to give you the advice you want whatever your level of gardening knowledge and experience, so please ask us for any help you need.
The Hillier Gardening Club
Gardening is a hobby and an interest for millions. Some are experienced, skilled and know exactly what to do to get wonderful results. However many are grateful to find someone to talk to for a little help and advice. Through the Hillier Gardening Club we talk directly to our customers and aim to give budding gardeners the help they need to succeed in their gardens.
How it Started
The club was started in 1990 by Garden Centre Director Andrew McIndoe and Philippa Bensley, a contributor to, and editor of, the Club magazine to the present day. The club was launched as part of a National "Gardening for Beginners" campaign and has always had an ambitious agenda to reach a mass audience. At the start of 2007 membership is over 180,000 households.
It's Easy to Join
Joining the Hillier Gardening Club is easy just fill in an enrolment form at any of our garden centres. It's free, so there is nothing to lose, we even promise not to pass on details to any other organisations.
The Club Magazine
The Hillier Gardening Club Magazine, mailed direct to members three times a year, is the main way the Club communicates with members. It is packed with practical articles, design ideas, information on the latest plants, club workshops and holidays, not to mention special offers and promotions. What makes the magazine unique is the way it is created. No advertising agency or outside marketing organisation has an influence. The club "Mag" is researched, written and photographed by the Hillier team. It is opinionated, personal, quirky and always full of the best up-to-date information for gardeners.
It's All About Information
There is no shortage of expert advice available at our garden centres; our aim is to be there to help. However there will always be customers who visit and leave without getting the valuable advice that would help them achieve better results. The Hillier Gardening Club informs and backs up the expert advice given by the garden centre staff. The magazine covers topics such as basic design; from choice of paving to planting and colour combinations. Features on plants for chalk soil, gardening on clay and selection of ground cover plants are the type of article popular with thousands of members.
On the practical side helpful information on lawn care, or choice of the various composts and growing media available, attempts to answer some of the most frequently asked gardening questions.
Competitions
A popular feature of the magazine is the ‘Speaking Botanically’ quiz – designed to test your botanical and horticultural knowledge. With fabulous prizes to give away in each issue this is a firm favourite with members.
Hands-on Workshops
There is a time for reading and thinking and there is a time to get your hands dirty; Gardening Club workshops have become a favourite. Held at the garden centres, workshops are informal, members turn up anytime during the day and stay as long as they like. We cover basic propagation techniques to get you started in March and in May and October basket and container workshops are a regular date in members' diaries.
Staff and customers share knowledge at workshops. They make as much mess as they like, have a good gossip and take home something that will flourish in the garden for months.
Events and Holidays
Events have always been a popular part of the club. Easy to organise in the early days with just 5,000 members we now have to think somewhat bigger! This year we are organising a series of informative talks in all our garden centres, which are free to attend. Subjects range from Planning and Planting for Drought, Creative Containers, Roses and Orchids.
The Hillier Gardening Club has now been everywhere from the island paradise of Madeira to The Floriade exhibition in Holland. All of our trips are bespoke and organised specifically with our members in mind. We take a lot of effort to make sure the trips are seeing gardens at their best and gaining special concessions such as private viewings and tours with owners or head gardeners. Our most popular trips are four-day coach based holidays visiting the gardens of a region. Four days is long enough to be a proper holiday and make friends with your fellow travellers, and is short enough to make sure there are no problems leaving home and garden commitments.
Leaflets and Offers
If our customers don't shop with us we can't go on! Gardening Club members are sent periodic special offer leaflets giving them prior notice of key promotions in our garden centres. Another member's privilege featured in the leaflets is occasional discount days. Members must show their membership card to qualify for the discount.
Holiday with Hillier
Classic Short Breaks for Garden Lovers 2007
Treat yourself to a Hillier gardening holiday during the long days of summer. It is so easy to lose yourself in the beauty of the gardens and the good company of your fellow travellers. A profusion of colour and scent awaits you from some of the most beautiful gardens in the UK and Europe.
We have a new tour to Dublin with an amazing itinerary for any plant lover and we have decided not to ignore our local area so we now have a Hampshire tour. Our Cote D’Azur trip was such a success last year and so over subscribed we are running three trips in 2007. We have fine tuned our Norfolk and Devon & Somerset holidays and really believe these are outstanding trips and value for money.
All tours start from Ampfield House, near Romsey in Hampshire, where we have free parking available. There are facilities available at Ampfield House if you arrive early and staff on hand to help with baggage etc… We travel by executive coach with toilet and air conditioning and you will be joined by a Brookland Travel guide and Hillier host.
We can provide a list of B&B’s and hotels in and around Romsey if necessary for those that need to overnight beforehand or after. The Romsey area has many attractions and this can be a lovely way to extend your holiday.
Please be aware we may need to make alterations to itineraries to maintain the smooth running of the holiday. We hope you enjoy reading about our holidays and will be very happy to welcome you should you join us.
