Can You Lay Turf In Winter?

This is a question so often asked of us. The simple and quick answer is YES

In fact, I would go so far as to say that it is the best time of the year, for the following reasons:

No irrigation/watering required

Turf will be beautifully established by the summer, when you will make the most use of it

Turf will survive almost a week rolled up on the pallet, giving you much more time to make a good job

There is more chance of staying off the turf until it is rooted

Yes, the turf will take a lot longer to root, (up to a month) however you have much less reason to go on the turf. It will not require watering, mowing or fertilising.

I have seen turf successfully laid on pre-prepared frozen ground. The only problem when it is as cold as that is that the turf may temporarily freeze in the rolls and be impossible to roll out. However you only need to wait a few days, until the temperatures rise again and the turf becomes pliable again.
You should happily plan laying turf in November and February. But as stated above, if you really want to, you can lay turf perfectly well in December and January.
