Garden Antique Features of the Future?

Recently Sotheby’s auctioned four apparently ordinary 20th century stone planters for £5,000. They were made by Haddonstone and are still being produced today at a cost of £55 each.

A newcomer to their range is a traditional large Elizabethan jardinière with a pretty strapwork decoration. More contemporary are the Arcadian planters inspired by the art nouveau designs of Lalique and Galle. Although these are described as ‘planters’ they look equally attractive without any plants in them.

New Haddonstone products are naturally bright and clean as are those carved in stone, but after only a couple of years they acquire a ‘weathered’ patina which adds to their good looks – and possibly their value. Gardeners prefer their ‘stone’ features to look aged.
