Description

Devon boasts the highest concentration of National Plant Collections® in the UK – a total of 62, covering plants ranging from Agapanthus to Veltheimia. Three of these precious collections go on show at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Hampton Court Palace flower show, from 4-9th July, alongside a special display celebrating the role of gardens and gardeners in protecting plant biodiversity over a 250-year period. The display is being staged by the NCCPG*, the overseeing body for National Plant Collections®, which also has an active county group of plant enthusiasts based in Devon.

To create a better future you need to know about the past. The NCCPG’s display features two interlinked nursery gardens from past and present – from 1750 and 2006 – which show the difference that adventurers, explorers and plant hunters from the last 250 years have made to the plants available to us today. The gardens will underline the fascination of plant history, and the importance of conserving Britain’s internationally-diverse plant heritage, now present in gardens across the land.

Devonian National Collection Holders taking part in the NCCPG Plant Heritage Marquee and its displays include Mr & Mrs Dick and Lorna Fulcher of Pine Cottage Plants in Eggesford, with their collection of Agapanthus, of which they have over 280 different types; Mrs S Reynolds of Seaton with her collection of 215 Penstemon cultivars; and Mr & Mrs E Heaton of Kingskerswell, Newton Abbot, with their collections of 200 Sisyrinchium and Tigridieae.
