CONSERVING PLANT ORIGINS, PROTECTING PLANT FUTURES: 30 YEARS OF NCCPG
Description
In 2008, it will be 30 years since the RHS convened a special conference which led to the formation of the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens. This in turn led to the NCCPG National Plant Collection® scheme, providing ‘living libraries’ of plant material.  Since 1978, the National Plant Collections have grown to number over 650, and our pioneering work has led to similar schemes being set up in other countries.

NCCPG is issuing an open invitation to garden writers and colleagues in the media to work with us in highlighting the importance of national reference collections with the general public.  NCCPG National Plant Collections help preserve a diverse gene pool; provide a haven for plants threatened in the wild, and provide material for breeding better garden plants. In some cases our collection holders also contribute their knowledge and plant material to the advancement of medical science.  National Plant Collections provide a buffer against the effects of climate change and are a national resource for horticultural education for all age groups.

NCCPG is willing to help you explore the past, present and future of Britain’s plant heritage through our 650+ National Plant Collections, covering plant genera both native and imported.  For help with feature ideas, contact with National Collection holders and information on NCCPG please contact those listed below.
