about Chilstone

Michael Dibben founded Chilstone Garden Ornaments in 1953 at Great Linford Manor in Buckinghamshire. In 1976 the company moved to Sprivers, a beautiful National Trust property. In 1996 it was felt that the new show gardens should be constructed at Langton Green, near Tunbridge Wells. This would consolidate our workshop and retail sites and make Chilstone’s show gardens more accessible to the public. The new show gardens were opened by Alan Titchmarsh in 1997.

garden Products
Every Chilstone piece is made entirely by hand, by our craftsmen, in our workshops just outside Tunbridge Wells, using the process we invented over 50 years ago; to give you a product that represents a genuine alternative to natural stone, with many advantages – especially cost!
The exact composition of Chilstone remains a secret, but basically it is a fine crushed sandstone and a special cement binder, carefully packed by hand in layers into moulds as a semi-dry mix. This gives the finished article a finish and texture almost identical to natural stone, and which will mature and mellow with age just as natural stone does.
Chilstone has many advantages over the more commercial wet-cast products that are available, there is virtually no shrinkage with Chilstone, there is no aggregate separation, no stratification, and Chilstone actually looks like natural stone, unlike the hard and glassy finish of some of our competitors’ products. Our compressive strength is around 24 N/mm2 and Chilstone can be readily cut without specialist tools and can easily be engraved if desired.

architectural products
Establised in 1953, Chilstone’s long history has enabled us to perfect a reconstituted stone with a superb texture, making it it virtually indistinguishable from quarried stone.

Our stone is entirely hand made by craftsmen, giving us the kind of control during the production process which enables us to readily adapt our standard items to your design requirements. We are always pleased to advise on how to realise your ideas in Chilstone Stone.
