Paula Groves - Sculpted Metal
Sculptedmetal is a small business run and owned by artist Paula Groves, a sculptor who creates art with mild and stainless steel.
The main focus for Paula is creating sculptures, for indoor or outdoor use, but previous commissions also include clocks, lights, medals and trophies.
Paula works from her studio, The Tack Room, in Rochester, along with her two studio assistants, Anton Dickinson (assistant in the main studio), and Kaleigh Harwood (office assistant).
Paula has produced and sold more than 70 sculptures over the past two years, working primarily with scrap metal locally sourced. Selling worldwide from solo exhibitions and galleries.
Her work has increased in scale and she is receiving prestigious commissions from Medway Council, science organisations, architects and sculpture parks. Paula also likes to work collaboratively with other artists.
“The majority of the material I use in my work is reclaimed mild and stainless steel. It has a story to tell, showing its history in its form and the dents, marks and scars that it bears.
In working like this, inspiration comes from the metal itself; the shape it already has, or how I can enhance it. Purity of form is a passion for me; the circle, square and triangle are recurring themes in my work.
In addition to this, I look at outside sources and take visual references from these, which work well for site-specific projects. Also the benefit of this is when I get specific shapes made for me I can then use my own scrap material for further work."
