The Broomhill National Sculpture Prize is a competition that was launched in 2009 by the The Broomhill Art and Sculpture Foundation to provide an exciting challenge for new and emerging UK-based sculptors.
“As Broomhill celebrates its fifteenth anniversary this year – I wanted to mark the occasion with this contest, which brings together the brightest and best new sculptors in the country and allows them to showcase their work in our unique sculpture park.” Rinus van de Sande (Broomhill owner)
The 2012 National Sculpture Prize exhibition featured works by Oliver Adams, Edward Baldwin, Ann Balmforth, Michael Branthwaite, Richard Cresswell, Mary George, Graham guy robinson, Robert Hitzeman, Helen snell and Ian Stoney who have all received £1,000 to bring their works to life at Broomhill. They now compete for the judges’ first prize of £3,500 and a permanent place in the Broomhill Art and Sculpture Foundation collection.

A ‘Public Speaks’ voting ballot is open for the duration of the competition, culminating in a £1,500 prize for the artist whose sculpture receives the most votes from the public. The public is invited to vote for their favourite NSP sculpture at Broomhill or online here . (The ‘Judges’ and the ‘Public Speaks’ winner will be announced in October 2012.)

Celebrating Our 15th Anniversary
With Great British Sculpture
In this year of greatness and excellence it seems fitting to invite one of the UK’s most talented and acclaimed sculptors to exhibit at Broomhill. Patron of RWA and co-founder the Bristol Drawing School, Carol Peace is an internationally renowned sculptor specialising in human form and expressive movement.
Carol Peace’s sculptures and drawings are now on display on the lawn and in the gallery at Broomhill in an exhibition called ‘Silent Moments – Observations of Human Life’.

They have always held my talent and potential in high regard, artist’s need that belief from people to keep going, to be able to take risks, it’s mostly about confidence and if people believe in you they give you that.” Carol Peace

Welcome to Broomhill Art Hotel, Sculpture Gardens, Art Gallery and Restaurant in North Devon
Following a successful Summer Exhibition that displayed new pieces from 10 sculptors, the judging panel (comprising internationally acclaimed artists/sculptors Tim Shaw, Rob Ryan, Carol Peace and Nigel Minard -Head of Art at West Buckland) came together this month to select the winning piece.
The Ten short-listed sculptors were carefully selected by the judging panel at the beginning of this year. Each of the ten finalists were given a £1,000 budget and 3 months to turn their proposed idea into an inspiring finished piece for the Exhibition.
The judges favourite and winner of the Broomhill NSP 2011 title is ‘Uncertain Futures: Larder’ by Suzanne Hobbs.
“Suzanne’s monumental sculpture was chosen for its fantastic interaction with the landscape, providing viewers with a very exciting experience. The piece was beautifully executed with a social awareness angle, tying in with the enclosed trapped emotion of the time we live in. We’re delighted with the outcome, Suzanne put great thought and effort into her piece and is truly deserving of the 2011 title. Suzanne says “My work is inspired by years working on an organic farm in North Devon and recognising the earths fragile nature. Climate change; food scarcity; conflict over resources, have become international news staples, yet in our consumer society, the importance of our environment to our own survival appears forgotten. Being selected to create a sculpture for the NSP Competition has given me the chance to communicate my fears and anxieties through the voice of my work.” [full statement below]
Every visitor to the exhibition had the opportunity to vote for their favourite sculpture, this activity proved as popular as ever! The sculpture that captured visitors attention the most this year and winner of the ‘Public Speaks’ title is Endless Curve by Wenqin Chen, also awarded a ‘special commendation’ by the judges for creating an uplifting, open, positive, healing, well executed sculpture that has the right spirit and powerful inspiration in a difficult time.

Suzanne will be awarded with a cheque and trophy at the NSP Award Evening on Thur 17th Nov. This event is open to the public. Enjoy acoustic music from Jenna Witts & Amy Newton, plus a delicious Mediterranean Buffet, tickets are £10pp.
