Augustusburg, Brühl

Augustusburg, Brühl
Description
In Brühl, near Cologne, is the Rococo treasure and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Augustusburg.

C
ommissioned by the Elector and Archbishop of Cologne, Clement August, it was built in 1725 by the eminent architect Schlaun and a few years later restyled and completed by Cuvillies.

G
irard’s original garden design still exists and strictly follows the innovations and subsequent rules of the French style. A two part Parterre, with delicate flower and box arrangements and water basins, is accessible from the terrace by stairs. This forms the focal point of the garden and takes the eye into the distance towards a delightful English garden.
