Description
The Arley Estate
Arley is a place of enormous character, charm and interest. Visitors are frequently struck by the warm and intimate atmosphere and the feeling that Arley is a much-cherished family home.
The Gardens, which are amongst the finest in Britain, are outstanding for their vitality, variety and historical interest and are particularly celebrated for the magnificent double herbaceous border. The Hall is an impressive example of a Victorian country house built in the Elizabethan style.
Arley Hall is one of the most interesting and attractive stately homes in the North West. The elaborate ceilings & oak panelling, impressive fireplaces, intricate stained glass and beautiful contents are not the only features which make Arley Hall so special. Visitors are enthralled by entering a piece of living history, which gives an intimate insight into life in the Hall and the history of a family that has cherished Arley as their home for over 550 years.
The present Hall stands on the same site as the first house built by the family in 1469, and is situated at the very heart of the Estate overlooking the famous Gardens and beautifully landscaped Park. Lord Ashbrook, the great great grandson of Rowland Egerton-Warburton, who built the present Arley Hall, grew up in the Hall as a child and spent some time as a young man living there.
The Gardens
Amongst the finest in Britain and Europe the gardens have been created over the last 250 years by successive generations of the same family and thus offer an unusual blend of long history and traditional design with inspired modern ideas and additions. The result is a garden rich in atmosphere, interest and vitality – a wonderful example of the idea that the best gardens are living, changing works of art.
The garden's best know feature is its Herbaceaus Border which was probably the first border of its kind planted in England, this along with the unique Quercus Ilex Columns, Pleached Lime Avenue of trees and the furlong walk make this this simply the most amazing and interesting garden.
Within its eight acres of formal gardens, which can take you several hours to meander around, there are many different areas, each with its own distinctive character, on the NE side of the house, beyond the Chapel is The Grove, a well established arboretum and a Woodland Walk of about 6 or 7 acre. The Grove has a pathway approx 1/3rd of a mile long and it will take you approx 30 minutes to walk around depending on your pace and interest in the planting, while the Woodland Walk is approx 1/5th of a mile long and will take you approx 15 minutes to walk, once again depending on your pace.
At Arley you will see a huge range of different plants of all kinds, making it a treasure trove both for the keen plantsman and for the less specialised visitor. Both The Grove and Woodland walk are not suitable for wheelchair access during wet periods, however The Gardens have good disabled access, no matter what the weather, please be aware though that the pathways throughout the Gardens are all either grass and gravel .
These magnificent gardens are maintained by a fantastic team of gardeners led by Head Gardener Gordon Baillee. We are extremely lucky to have a number of excellent volunteer gardeners; however the award winning team consists of: Dave Groom, Doug Rustage, James Youd and Mark Ormerod-Jordan.
We were particularly proud that Arley was selected as one of the Gardens of Distinction for Cheshire's Year of the Gardens scheme in 2008. This was an exciting new initative intended to celebrate the heritage of gardens and the green environment in the county of Cheshire.
Plant Nursery
For those visitors spellbound by the Gardens, Arley Hall Nursery gives you the opportunity to take some of the magic of Arley home with you. Viscount Ashbrook’s sister, Jane Foster, owns and manages the Nursery which works very closely with the Gardens, propagating many of its plants from those growing in the Gardens. The Nursery’s particular speciality is in herbaceous perennials and pelargoniums and a very wide selection of both is available here, almost all grown entirely on site.

Arley Hall for your Wedding and Civil Partnership
Arley is a place of enormous character, charm and interest. Guests arriving at the Estate will be struck by the warm and intimate atmosphere and the feeling that Arley is a much-cherished family home. Set amidst breath-taking surroundings; Arley Hall is an impressive example of a Victorian Country House built in the Elizabethan style and is one of the most interesting and attractive stately homes in the country. The lavish ceilings, elaborate carvings, plasterwork and stain glass windows create a wonderful feeling of grandeur and add to this perfect setting for any wedding celebration.
RW Bespoke Events Ltd are the preferred caterer at Arley Hall and Gardens, and are able to offer a truly individual service. Their reputation is built on inspired and inventive cuisine, they can assist you at every stage from innovative menu ideas to dramatic styling and all the expert guidance you need.
We recommend that you visit their website www.rwbespoke.com where you will find menu ideas, wine suggestions and direct email to their senior management team or alternatively contact them on 0161 273 3469.

Day with the Head Gardener
A rare opportunity to spend a exclusive, one-to-one day behind the scenes at one of the UKs most prestigeous and historic gardens with Arley’s Head Gardener and his team. Join in with a variety of seasonal tasks, such as propagating, pruning, dead heading, staking and cultivating. Gordon is a graduate in horticulture from Strathclyde University and has worked on several estates over the last 20 years from Lord Shawcross’s Estate near Eastbourne, Lord Sackville at Knole Park and Sting’s secluded estate ‘somewhere’ in Wiltshire!
This is a rare opportunity to work on the historic herbaceous border at Arley and to experiment with the many unusual varieties of vegetables and bedding plants grown for the gardens at Arley. See Arley’s own nursery where it produces many of the plants in the gardens and enjoy this special chance to work with the knowlegeable and enthusiastic team of gardeners at Arley.
To book ring 01565 777353 ext 31 or email helen.robinson@arleyhallandgardens.com
Education
Arley also welcomes school visits, at primary school level, to spend a day at Arley learning about The Hall and how people used to live, The Gardens and how the garden grows and develops through the seasons and finallyby planting seeds to take home to watch grow. We also invite schools to be involved in major events at Arley, such as the Garden Festival and Christmas as well as working with schools on longerterm growing project in the kitchen garden. For booking information on any of the above schools activities please ring Helen Robinson 01565 777353 Ext 31.
