Description
Welcome to Cois Cuain (pronounced coush cuann), a garden as close to the sea as it is possible to get without becoming a boat.

We are the WALSHS.  Mary is the gardener and Bob is the hole digger and rock mover

With tremendous help from Mother Nature, we have created a garden which, we think, is a little bit different.

Firstly, let me tell you where we are ---we are at Kilcrohane ,on the coast of West Cork, which as you know, is quite simply the most beautiful part of Ireland.  The garden is situated on the northern shore of Dunmanus Bay.  By sea, we are about eight miles from the Mizen head, which is the most Southerly point in Ireland.

If you are coming by road (Which is most likely for most), we are just ten miles from the village of Durrus and fifteen miles from the town of Bantry.

If you are coming from Cork City, or beyond, make it a day out.  There are other fabulous gardens in the area which you will thoroughly enjoy and which we recommend.

There are plenty of places to eat and drink too.  We will give you our recommendation without fee or fear.

Between the Angel's fishing rods and the Echium is Bob's boat.   (For the benefit of those not totally into gardens.)

As you can see from this picture, the garden is very close to the water, in fact the entire garden is within thirty metres of the Atlantic Ocean. We are lucky in that, the part of the Atlantic that touches us has, as it's main feature, the Gulf Stream. This keeps the climate temperate, so that many plants which would not normally grow in this latitude, do very well here. The main problem for the plants is salt-laden spray. During Winter gales the spray is blown over the garden leaving many plants in a fairly sorry state. Most of them recover from this attempt at horticultural homicide. In any case,  we do not get too many severe gales.

If you decide to come and visit Cois Cuain Garden, it might be a good idea to send us an email or make a phone call  ..... just to make sure we are not out fishing.
